The urgency of intersectionality | Kimberlé Crenshaw

Now more than ever, it's important to look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias -- and understand how the two can combine to create even more harm. Kimberlé Crenshaw uses the term "intersectionality" to describe this phenomenon; as she says, if you're standing in the path of multiple forms of exclusion, you're likely to get hit by both. In this moving talk, she calls on us to bear witness to this reality and speak up for victims of prejudice. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Faces Of Africa - Scales of Justice: The Unity Dow Story

Unity Dow is the former high court judge of Botswana, human rights activist, writer and politician. In 1992, she began what one would call the battle of the titans against the government. She challenged the attorney general on the clause in their law that stated dual citizenship was only earned from the father. Dow became the plaintiff seeking to allow children of the Botswana women married to foreigners become Batswana. She hit the spotlight as the ‘fearless legal eagle’.

    Talk Africa: African Women Leaders

From Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to Malawi’s Joyce Banda and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in the Africa Union – many African women have defied rhetoric and achieved what was once unimaginable: influential leadership roles. But while Africa has made strides in addressing gender inequality, current women leadership maintains that there is still much more to be done to break the tide of discrimination and disempowerment. So then what more can be done to further the agenda of women on the continent? And what progress has already been made by Africa’s women leaders? Beatrice Marshall and her panel of experts delve into this issue, on Talk Africa!

Leveraging the Power of Black Women

Leveraging the Power of Black Women

Black women work every day on the front lines and behind the scenes as advocates, organizers, leaders, and powerful voices for progress and social justice. Their work is often unsung and unrecognized, yet, they play a critical role in the success of their families, their workplaces, their communities, and society overall. This engagement is also reflected in their voting—for years, black women have been among the most active and reliable voters, recognizing the importance of engaging in the political process to achieve progress. But too often, the unique experiences of black women—like other women of color—are missing from the broader public debate about what women need and how best to respond. Persistent disparities in wages, health care, employment, economic outcomes, advancement opportunities, and more are among the many areas that call for targeted strategies and solutions. On the occasion of Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, a day which marks how far into the year African American women must work to earn the same amount as white men did the year before, please join the Center for American Progress for a thought-provoking conversation about the importance of black women’s activism and the power of black grassroots leaders in the current environment. This event is part of an ongoing series that focuses on race and creating power to move the progressive agenda forward. Introductory remarks: Carmel Martin, executive vice president for policy, Center for American Progress In discussion: Susan Taylor, founder and CEO, National CARES Mentoring Movement; editor-in-chief emeritus, Essence magazine Jocelyn Frye, senior fellow, Center for American Progress Featured panelists: Melanie Campbell, president and CEO, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation; convener, Black Women’s Roundtable Tracy Sturdivant, co-founder and co-executive director, Make It Work Janaye Ingram, director of national partnerships, Airbnb, national organizer and member of board of directors, Women’s March Alencia Johnson , director, Constituency Communications, Planned Parenthood Federation of America Moderator: Michele Jawando, vice president of Legal Progress, Center for American Progress, co-host of Thinking CAP Podcast

Judge Mandisa Maya first female SCA president

The judiciary does not intend to co-govern the country because doing so would be a recipe for disaster. This is the view of President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Justice Mandisa Maya. She's the first woman to head the SCA in its 107 years of existence. Maya says the doctrine of separation of powers defines the roles of three spheres of the state. Justice Maya spoke to our reporter in Bloemfontein Teboho Letshaba. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news
