By Pedi Obani, Ph.D.

The Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL) congratulates Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN on her appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation, and Strategic Partnership at the University of Ibadan. This new achievement is testament to the stellar professional qualities and academic prowess of Prof. Bamgbose, SAN. It also represents a significant achievement for African women in law who are pioneering remarkable achievements across the continent.

Professor Bamgbose is a renowned Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). It is remarkable that Professor Bamgbose was the only female recipient of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria award in 2018; she is the first and remains the only female Professor who has been conferred with the SAN rank.

She is a pioneer woman lawyer in her own right, holding important leadership positions both within the legal profession and in academia. She was the first female Head of Department in the Faculty of Law of the University of Ibadan. She became the Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, from 2009 until 2014. Since 2015, she has been an Internal Member, Governing Council, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. In 2019, became the Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association Women’s Forum.

Professor Bamgbose firmly believes that the duty of creating awareness on human rights and its preservation is crucial to the development and wellbeing of every nation. She has demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting human rights, particularly protection of the human rights of women in vulnerable situations, through the work she does as the Director of the Women’s Law Clinic at the University of Ibadan.

For Professor Bamgbose, her success is owed to God, discipline, sacrifice, and the support and patience of her husband and three children who are all lawyers as well. She shares all this and more in her inspirational Amandla! African Women in Law Speaker Series. Professor Bamgbose’s zeal and achievements as a pioneer woman in law continue to inspire many in Africa and beyond and remain most worthy of emulation and commendation!

The Institute for African Women in Law heartily congratulates Professor Bamgbose on this latest achievement. We wish her a memorable and successful tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation, and Strategic Partnership at the University of Ibadan.

Congratulations!
